99 Steps is one of the best-known historic stairways in Charlotte Amalie, rising through the hillside above the town’s waterfront in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Built from locally available brick brought as ship ballast, the stairway forms part of the network of steep lanes and steps created to connect the harbor with the higher parts of the settlement. Despite its name, the staircase contains more than 99 steps. It passes between historic buildings and tropical vegetation and provides access toward landmarks such as Government House and Blackbeard’s Castle, while illustrating how Charlotte Amalie’s hilly terrain shaped its urban design.
