Trakai is a small historic town west of Vilnius, surrounded by lakes and wooded landscapes in southeastern Lithuania. Its most recognizable landmark is Trakai Island Castle, a red-brick fortress built on an island in Lake Galvė and connected to the shore by a wooden bridge. The town itself is set between several lakes, including Lake Galvė, Lake Totoriškės, and Lake Luka, giving its streets and waterfront a distinctly waterside setting. Trakai Historical National Park protects the town and surrounding landscape, combining cultural sites with forests, wetlands, and lake shores.

Trakai has a distinctive multicultural heritage associated with the Karaim community, whose presence in the town is an important part of its identity. The Karaims are a Turkic-speaking religious community traditionally associated with Karaism, and their wooden houses with characteristic three-window façades can still be seen along Karaimų Street. The Kenessa, or Karaim house of worship, is another important landmark. Trakai Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the ruins of the Peninsula Castle add further layers to the town’s religious and political history.

Trakai Island Castle is the centerpiece of the town’s historic landscape. Built on an island in Lake Galvė, the complex includes defensive walls, towers, courtyards, and residential buildings surrounding a central castle. The Trakai History Museum operates within the castle and presents collections related to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the history of the fortress. Beyond the castle, visitors can explore the lakes by boat or follow walking and cycling routes through Trakai Historical National Park. The surrounding landscape contains small islands, wooded shores, wetlands, and viewpoints across the water.

Trakai’s cuisine reflects both Lithuanian traditions and the heritage of its Karaim community. Kibinai are the town’s best-known specialty, crescent-shaped pastries filled traditionally with seasoned meat and baked until golden. Karaim cuisine also includes kybyn and other dishes based on meat, dough, and vegetables. Local restaurants and bakeries along Karaimų Street commonly feature these foods, making the area a useful place to encounter the town’s culinary identity. Lake Galvė and the surrounding waterways also support recreational fishing and boating, while the wooded landscape provides berries, mushrooms, and other ingredients familiar in Lithuanian cooking.
