Seaside is a coastal city on Oregon’s northern Pacific shore, set between the ocean, the Necanicum River, and the wooded foothills of the Coast Range. Its broad sandy beach and compact oceanfront district have made it one of the state’s best-known coastal communities. The Promenade, a paved oceanfront walkway, follows the beach through the center of town and provides access to shops, restaurants, and public spaces. Seaside also has a distinct riverfront area, where the Necanicum meets the ocean and tidal waters shape the landscape.

Seaside has a long connection with the Clatsop people, whose traditional territory includes the northern Oregon coast. The city’s later development was closely associated with coastal recreation, transportation, and the construction of a large oceanfront promenade. The Seaside Turnaround, where Broadway meets the beach, is a recognizable local landmark and gathering place. The Seaside Museum and Historical Society preserves artifacts and stories from the community, while the Seaside Aquarium reflects the city’s continuing relationship with the Pacific Ocean and nearby marine environment.

The beach is Seaside’s central natural attraction, with wide stretches of sand suitable for walking, beachcombing, and observing changing tides and weather. The Necanicum Estuary provides habitat for shorebirds, waterfowl, and other coastal wildlife, while nearby Tillamook Head rises above the ocean west of the city. The Oregon Coast Trail passes through the area, connecting Seaside with surrounding coastal landscapes. At the southern end of town, the Lewis and Clark Salt Works marks a historic site associated with the Corps of Discovery and provides a small but distinctive link to the region’s past.

Seafood is an important part of Seaside’s food culture, with restaurants serving salmon, Dungeness crab, oysters, clams, and other Pacific Northwest ingredients. The city is also known for casual coastal foods, including fish and chips, chowder, saltwater taffy, and locally made ice cream. One distinctive detail is the Seaside Promenade, which has functioned as both a practical route along the ocean and a social gathering space for generations. Nearby rivers and estuaries also support fishing and wildlife observation, while the open beach provides changing views of the Pacific throughout the year.
