Thunder Bay is a city on the northwestern shore of Lake Superior, where the Kaministiquia River reaches one of the world's largest freshwater lakes. Surrounded by forests, rocky hills, and broad water views, it serves as a regional centre for transportation, education, industry, and services across Northwestern Ontario. The city occupies the traditional lands of the Ojibway people of Fort William First Nation and historic Métis settlements. Its waterfront, parks, historic districts, and access to surrounding wilderness give Thunder Bay a strong connection to both urban life and the landscapes of Lake Superior.

Thunder Bay's history is closely connected to Indigenous peoples, the fur trade, shipping, forestry, and the development of the communities of Port Arthur and Fort William. Fort William Historical Park recreates the North West Company's inland headquarters and interprets the relationships among Indigenous peoples, French-Canadian voyageurs, and Scottish fur traders. The city's Finnish heritage is also distinctive, reflecting the arrival of Finnish immigrants who became part of the region's forestry and industrial communities. Today, Anishinaabe culture remains an important part of the region, expressed through art, language, powwows, food traditions, and community events.

The landscape around Thunder Bay contains several notable natural landmarks. Anemki Wajiw, or Mount McKay, rises above the city on Fort William First Nation and provides views across Lake Superior and the surrounding countryside. The Sleeping Giant, a long rock formation on the Sibley Peninsula, is protected within Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, which contains an extensive trail network. Kakabeka Falls, west of the city, drops about 40 metres over the Kaministiquia River. Ouimet Canyon, northeast of Thunder Bay, exposes steep rock walls and supports plant species associated with more northern environments.

Thunder Bay's food culture reflects its northern location and diverse communities, with local restaurants and markets featuring Lake Superior fish, wild rice, locally grown produce, meats, and baked goods. Finnish traditions remain visible in foods such as Finnish pancakes, while Anishinaabe food traditions include wild rice harvesting and preparation. Amethyst is another distinctive regional product, as the gemstone is found in the Thunder Bay area and is recognized as Ontario's official gemstone. The city's position beside Lake Superior also supports fishing, sailing, paddling, and other activities closely tied to the freshwater environment.
