Auroville is an experimental township in Tamil Nadu, located near Puducherry on India’s southeastern coast. Conceived as a community dedicated to human unity, it brings together residents from many countries within a planned landscape of forests, gardens, farms, workshops, and residential areas. The township was designed by architect Roger Anger around a central area known as the Peace Area. Rather than functioning like a conventional town, Auroville focuses on community living, education, environmental work, crafts, and ongoing experiments in sustainable development and social organization.
Auroville was founded through the vision of Mirra Alfassa, known as the Mother, and the teachings of Sri Aurobindo. Its cultural identity is based on the idea of a community that rises above national, religious, and political divisions. The Matrimandir stands at the heart of this vision as a place for individual silent concentration rather than a conventional temple. The township also contains Savitri Bhavan, a center dedicated to the works of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, as well as cultural spaces where residents and visitors can learn about Auroville’s philosophy and community life.
The Matrimandir is Auroville’s most recognizable landmark, a large golden sphere set within the landscaped Peace Area and surrounded by gardens. Visitors can reach a designated viewing point after passing through the Auroville Visitors Centre, while access to the Inner Chamber follows separate arrangements. The wider township is divided into areas devoted to residential, cultural, international, and productive activities, with a surrounding Green Belt containing forests, farms, and sanctuaries. Walking and cycling through these areas provides a closer look at Auroville’s approach to land restoration, architecture, and community planning.
Food in Auroville reflects its international population as well as its emphasis on locally produced and organic ingredients. The Visitors Centre includes cafés and a food court, while eateries around the township serve Indian, European, and other international styles of cooking. Auroville also produces a range of foods and agricultural products, including herbal preparations, dried fruits, and cereals. One distinctive detail is the transformation of the landscape: the township was established on a largely barren plateau, and extensive tree planting and soil work have helped create a network of forests and gardens. This environmental work remains an important part of Auroville’s identity.
